Community: Select Neighborhoods of Henson Creek Watershed and Inner Beltway Communities
Funding Source: Prince George’s County Stewardship Grant Program
The Henson-Inner Beltway Community Greening Pilot aims to install small-scale, high-visibility green infrastructure practices on select residential and non-residential properties in the Henson Creek watershed and inner beltway communities. These practices, such as rain gardens, downspout disconnection, cisterns, and pavement removal, can reduce localized flooding, improve water quality, and demonstrate how property owners can be part of the solution.
Funded by the Prince George’s County Stormwater Stewardship Grant Program, the pilot emphasizes collaboration with private property owners, builds community awareness of local flooding and water quality issues, and tests innovative approaches to managing stormwater in visible, impactful ways to encourage interest in nature-based solutions across the watershed. Working with the Chesapeake Bay Trust and Prince George’s County Department of the Environment, the project team has identified several neighborhoods, communal areas, and non-residential candidate sites for potential green infrastructure projects. The pilot will also integrate the County’s Urban Tree Program by pairing new tree plantings with additional stormwater practices.
The LID Center has begun engaging property owners and community representatives to share information about the pilot and review possible opportunities. These early discussions help to raise awareness, assess feasibility, and inform next steps.
