Storm Smart Schools Guide

The Low Impact Development Center Inc. participated in a design charrette at Sedgefield Elementary which was used to produce design concepts to address the most flood-prone areas of the school property. The LID Center also worked with CSRA Inc. and the EPA Mid-Atlantic Region to develop the Storm Smart Schools guide, which provides education and guidance to stakeholders interested in using green infrastructure on school grounds to manage stormwater and achieve environmental literacy goals. The guide outlines the multiple benefits of school-based green infrastructure and the eight steps to implementation. It also highlights the process taken by the City of Newport News and the Newport News Public School system in selecting one of its schools – Sedgefield Elementary School – as a demonstration site for green infrastructure practices.
